Original Painting "Merry Xmas to Europe (Gilets Jaunes), 2018
- Original Painting, Synthetic Polymer on Ply Wood board.
- Sealed with clear gloss varnish for protection.
This painting (acrylic on board, approx. 60cm x 75cm) was a recent exploration into the #giletsjaunes protests that rocked (and continue to rock) France and revealed the ugly reality of neoliberal politics, where the ruling class produces hip, young figures of the political centre like Macron. He is meant to carry out further the European program of harsh economic austerity. Wrong move. Here, the people have managed to apprehend and demobilize the Macron machine. The tank-like beast represents all that is repressive about capitalism, and the fact that the so-called 'reasonable' policies of the liberal centre rely heavily on the militarised policing of the working class, so profits will continually flow to the rich. I chose the phrase from some of the graffiti that was posted online during protests. I hope I'm correct that "A bas la caviar, vive le kebab" translates into English as "down with caviar, long live the kebab". I think this is a great piece of poetry as it captures an anti-establishment mood of working class solidarity as opposed to racism and division peddled by the ruling class.
